Compatibility of Quantitative and Qualitative Representations of Belief

چکیده
The compatibility of quantitative and quali tative representations of beliefs was studied extensively in probability theory. It is only recently that this important topic is consiJ ered in the context of belief functions. In this paper, the compatibility of various quan titative belief measures and qualitative belief structures is investigated. Four classes of be lief measures considered are: the probabil ity function, the monotonic belief function, Shafer's belief function, and Smets' general ized belief function. The analysis of their individual compatibility with Jiff ercut belief structures not only provides a sound basis for these quantitative measures, but also allevi ates some of the difficulties in the acquisition and interpretation of numeric belief numbers. It is shown that the structure of qualilati·ve probability is compatible with monotonic be lief functions. Moreover, a belief structure slightly weaker than that of q1lalitative belief is compatible with Smets' generalized belief functions.

Formal Representations of Belief
Epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief. Belief is thus central to epistemology. It comes in a qualitative form, as when Sophia believes that Vienna is the capital of Austria, and a quantitative form, as when Sophia's degree of belief that Vienna is the capital of Austria is at least twice her degree of belief that tomorrow it will be sunny in Vienna. Formal epistemology, as...

This study aims to offer a critical analysis of V. S. Naipaul’s second Islamic travelogue Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions Among the Converted Peoples (1998), which chronicles the author’s excursions to the 4 non-Arab Muslim countries of Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, and Malaysia. This critique is presented, firstly, through problematizing the author’s theorization on the theme of Muslim conversi...
متن کاملDesign and Validation of Quranic-Narrative Model of Hope Therapy with Integrated Monotheistic Treatment Approach
Introduction: In the Holy Quran, hope, especially hope for the future, has been addressed many times and in different ways. In general, the study of the concept of hope shows that in any case, hope means expecting to achieve the goal accompanied by effort. In recent years, to achieve such a goal, especially in Iran, integrated monotheistic therapy has been used. The aim of this study was to des...
متن کامل‘Representational Repertoires’ of Neoliberal Ideologies in Interchange (Third Edition) Series
Considering the fact that engagement with political economy is central to any fully rounded analysis of language and language-related issues in the neoliberal-stricken world today, and that applied linguistics has ignored the role of political economy (Block, Gray, & Holborow, 2012), for the first time, this study investigated the representations of neoliberal ideologies in the Interchange Thi...
متن کاملA Non-numeric Approach to Uncertain Reasoning
This paper presents a non-numeric approach to uncertain reasoning by extending the incidence calculus. In parallel to the well known fuzzy, belief/plausibility, probability, and necessity/possibility measures, the corresponding classes of non-numeric functions are examined. A method of constructing non-numeric functions is discussed using the notion of compatibility relations. Non-numeric funct...
